WILD LIFE IN KASHMIR (INDIA)Jammu & Kashmir State Map General Information Places to Visit Wildlife Places of Worships Fairs & Festivals Jammu and Kashmir is a state with generally mountainous surface intercepted with lovely valleys and drained by perennial rivers. It is one of the most wonderful region in the world where a large variety of fauna exist. The common animals which could be seen at this region are: THE MARMOT Found in all the high valleys of Kashmir these are handsome animals with reddish colour from the skin of which furs are made. They are found along Gilgit and Ladakh. THE GREAT TIBETAN SHEEP Found in the Chang-Chinne Valley in Ladakh and the neighbour Pankgong Lake. The male is light brown in colour and with a streak running along the chest, stomach and legs. THE SHARPU Found in Ladakh region, this animal is a good climber.It is also known as Urial. THE BHARAL Also known as Narpu, widely distributed in the Ladakh region. Mainly found on high elevations on the Sasser pass leading to Mustang. THE HIMALAYAN IBEX Also called Kail or Skya in Ladakh.It is found in Northern Kashmir, Ladakh, Shyok valley. This animal is famous because of its fine wool and it is used in weaving shawls. THE SEROW This animal is found among rocks and forests from Kashmir to Kashtwar, Chamb, Kullu and as far as Nepal. The colour of the animal is blackish red and reddish grey. They basically stay in one place and don't wander much. THE NILGAI ANTELOPE It is considered a sacred animal in Jammu. It is a heavily built animal and a wonderful jumper. Found all along Kumaon, Jammu and Sialkot its skin is used for mushak to carry water or to make a raft in crossing water. THE TIBETAN GAZELLE This is an animal of plateau of Northern Ladakh, Rupshu and is found in small herds and does not descend below 14,000 ft. THE MARKHOR Found in Chilas, Gilgit, Chitral and in all Southern, Eastern and Northern range of the Kashmir Valley. Basically shy animals they have a great sense of smelling and are mostly migrating in search of pasturage. During winters their skin is grey or yellowish grey, but during summer it changes its colour from reddish to yellowish brown. The animal prefers to stay in rocky mountains but does not live in high hills covered with deep snow. THE SNOW LEOPARD These animals are found in hilly parts of Dachigam, Gilgit, Ladakh and on high altitudes. Leopards are beautiful and ferocious animals and generally come out during night. THE CAT FAMILY The common cats found in this region are golden cat, pallas cat and leopard cat. The golden cat is red in colour darker on the back and lighter lower parts. Pallas cat is mainly found in Ladakh. The hair on its body gives a silvery appearance with brown stripes on the back while lower portions are purely white. The head is marked with irregular spots. The fur is very dense, silky and long. The leopard cat has a very beautiful skin. Generally light tawny in colour with black and broad lines on back with black spots. the lower portions are spotted. The tail is marked with black spots. Other cats are jungle cats, waved cats and desert cats. Cats are mostly killed for their skin. They are the charm of the land and need to be preserved for natural beauty. THE BLACK BEAR This is a common animal which creates havoc in maize fields. The bears come to the lower ranges for food and have a great sense of smell. THE YAK Also known as Dong. Thickly hairy animal with hairs flowing down from the body, shoulder sides and chest, the tail a hairy bush is used in worship. The sense of hearing and smelling is highly developed. THE MUSK DEER Found all along the Himalayas. The fur of the animal is coarse and brittle. These animals are hornless. This animal is killed for its musk pod. This musk is used for medicines and writing charms. The state is famous for its hangul which is an endangered species.
Found throughout the valley excluding the Pantsal and Kaj Nag Ranges. It is chiefly found in Wardwan Valley,
Kashtiwar, Bhaderwah, Gurez and in Tilail villages.
The female has no horns. The colouring depends on the climate of the place where they live and also on the age. The hair on the
neck is coarse, long and sometimes thick. This is much less marked on the female than on the male. The hair on the lower part
of the neck of the stag is very long and in an old animal very dark brown.
